The thousands of sinkholes in Siberia’s Yamal Peninsula have been formed as melting permafrost from warming temperatures releases methane collected underground, causing methane explosions. Seen from satellite imagery, the sinkholes, though highly destructive to the geology of the region, are intensely beautiful at the same time. The contrast between the horrifying destruction and the magnificence of that destruction is stunning. To me, it is as if the Earth is consciously responding to the damage we have caused to it - the Earth is breaking, beautifully.
